Exploring Advanced Portuguese Translation and Professional Presentations

8 Years, 9-translations and several revisions since the first edition of my book it continues to make an impact on the lives of people working in the linguistic fields. But despite the thousands of copies that have been sold there seems to be material in the book that is often over looked. Despite the many gratifying emails, letters, and telephone calls from around the world, I’ve discovered that most translator after reading the book default to the main concepts. While the book carries the title of The Science of Document Translation, it includes chapters that branch out and away from the focus of the title. In fact, why the primary subject matter focuses on document translation there is over 200 pages on additional subject matter. If one bothers to read the other material, then they will gain new skills in delivering live content to audiences. However, those aspects aren’t even mentioned on the cover.

We decided on the title of the text in order to draw awareness to the fact both writings and style are more critical than imagery in French Translator companies. I think we all know that images alone do not make a speech. Think about it. When was the last time you ever heard of a slide show leading people to an action such as voting, buying, protesting, or volunteering? Witness the powerful speeches that move hearts and minds: State of the Union addresses, inaugurals, nominations, eulogies, sermons, commencements, keynotes, and even locker room pep talks. What portion of the demonstration did the speaker need to use slides? Therefore, what presenters say and how they are translated are of far greater importance than what they show. This is one reason that we decided to focus most of the content in the manual on building translation skills while also providing supplemental material on delivery, body language, eye contact, and voice.

I’m not saying that Portuguese Translation professionals will see the collapse of PowerPoint as a medium to convey thoughts. After all, PowerPoint has become the medium of choice from grade school rooms to corporate boardrooms. Images and slides are just one tool that presenters can use to help simplify difficult ideas and convey thoughts that are often described as abstract. But instead of beating up on people who rely on PowerPoint as a crutch, I just want to stress the importance of using slides correctly. Despite popular belief, I also think that slides and graphics should be used in presentations but in support position. PowerPoint should have a support role in speeches that range from product demonstration to presidential campaigns, financial meetings, strategic planning, annual conferences, classroom discussions and more.

Can you now name of some the difficulties that deter German Translator Agencies from being effective? If we think back a few years then we can see why this has happened. The idea behind the modern day presentation emerged during the 19th century when small groups of people began to gather to together to show and explain the content of a topic to an audience or learner. In that setting, the flip chart became the center of attention as a large surface that all the participants could see and share; but it also served to document the ideas that could later be copied and distributed to others who did not attend the session.
